

John was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on September 22, 1949 to Hammett and Lois Vance. After graduating S.H. Rider High School in 1968, where he was a member of the band, John enlisted in the United States Navy when he was 19. He received a bachelors of science from California State University, a Masters of Arts and Masters of Public Administration from Midwestern State University of Wichita Falls. He served around the western Hemisphere in various capacities related to radio communication before retiring honorably as a Chief Petty Officer in 1993. He later retired from the Postal Service in 2009.
John was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls. He loved to discuss scripture, encourage others in the faith, and sing about the Grace of God. One of his great pleasures was listening to others sing. He married Judy Ann Ditmore on May 10, 2008 and they lived in their Wichita Falls home surrounded by their children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Hammett and Lois Vance, and his grandparents.
He is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Judy Ann Vance, his three children, Shawn Vance (Marina) of Wichita Falls, Brian Vance (Rebecca) of Hawthorne, CA., and Amy Portmann (Kurt) of Wichita Falls. Step daughters Kelly Stelmack (Jesse) of Angleton, Texas, Kristi King (Crawford) of Denton, Texas, and Kerri Ricks (George Storey) of Wichita Falls. Two sisters, Carole Snodgrass (Jim) of Enola, AR. and Sarah Sanders (Don) of Zavalla, Tx. He is survived by 18 grandkids and numerous great grandkids, nieces, nephews.
A visitation for John will be held Monday, July 31, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Hampton Vaughan Crestview Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 1917 Archer City Highway, Wichita Falls, Texas 76302, followed by a chapel funeral service at 2:00 PM.
