Mary was born December 10, 1924, in Wharton, Texas, and moved to Wichita Falls at an early age. She was a life-long resident and local business woman. Along with her late husband, W.E. (Gene) Mathews, she owned and operated Mathews Bros. TV, one of the largest TV and appliance dealerships in North Texas during the 1960’s. In the 1970’s and 1980’s she managed Martha’s Outlet children’s dress shop in downtown Wichita Falls. After basically retiring, she devoted her time to the First Baptist Church where she continued to work in the children’s nursery until last March, when she was forced to fully retire due to heart problems. Mary’s life was an example of being content with life’s blessings she had been given. She asked for little but gave a lot, and was devoted to her family. God bless you, Mary, as you now enjoy eternal life and perfect peace.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Mathews, her parents, J. C. and Francis Jancik, and a brother, Jerry Jancik.
She is survived by a sister, Martha McMahan of Houson; sister-in-law, Murlene Jancik of Wichita Falls; two sons, Richard Mathews and wife, Margaret of Fort Worth, Dr. Robert Mathews and wife, Anna of Dallas; grandchildren, Dr. Elizabeth Mathews McCarroll and husband, Robert of Fort Worth, and Libby Laughlin of Dallas; great-grandchildren, Abigail and William McCarroll of Fort Worth; and numerous loving nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, November 14, 2011 at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Wichita Falls with Jay Lowder officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Children’s Ministry at First Baptist Church.
