Mary Lou was born to Mary and Bernice Evans, January 7, 1932, in Chico, Texas. She was the fourth of seven siblings, preceded in death by Walton Crane, Geraldine Daulton, Josephine Venable, and Carol Crumpton. She leaves behind one brother, BD (Donna) Evans and one sister, Judy Crumpton. Mary Lou married the love of her life, Bobby Gene Steed, in Wichita Falls, Texas, on January 30, 1949 where they built a family and a wonderful life together. They remained married there until his death in 1994.
At age 17, Mary Lou began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she dedicated the next 38 years of her life. In those 38 years, she helped so many people find rewarding careers with Southwestern Bell, including her husband, brother, brother-in-law, nephew and so many more. Her employment at SWBT led to her lifelong involvement in the Telephone Pioneer Clubs and Civitan organization. Mary Lou was a loving, sweet soul, always willing to help people in any way she could, whether family, friend, or stranger.
In January 2015, because of her health, Mary Lou moved to Lubbock to live with her daughter, Terri, her husband, Brad, and their family. She joined Lubbock Baptist Temple and attended services there as long as her health would allow. She had a strong faith and shared it with her family. While living in Lubbock, Mary Lou had the pleasure of becoming a great Mimi 7 times. She loved holding and watching the babies. It made her day when they came to visit.
February 2021, it became necessary for Mary Lou to move in to a care home so she could get round-the-clock care. The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of Silvertop Residential Care Home and Hospice of Lubbock for their compassionate care for Mary Lou during her final months.
Mary Lou is survived by her children Karen (Mike) Mask, Terri (Brad) Welch; grandchildren Kristin (Katy) Mask, Kara (Tom) Weakley, Kaytlyn (Zac) Gilbreath, Carly (Nick) Torres, Mikayla (Jake) Chester and 8 great-grandchildren. She will be missed dearly.
