A woman who loved life, her family, and her red hair, Bernadine A. Hoppes was the youngest of 13 and born in Mt. Hope, Kansas on May 23, 1932. When young, her father began a chicken farm, and the family made a move to Derby, KS. Once settled, she began at Sacred Heart all-girls school where, after graduating, she became a telephone operator at Southwestern Bell Telephone in Wichita. It was during her time at work she met her first husband, Gerald "Jerry" Moats, and the pair wed at St. Joseph Catholic Church on April 19, 1952.
Jerry was serving in the Air Force when the pair relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. Here they welcomed a daughter and a son where Bernadine loved being a hands on, stay at home mom. The next stop on their journey was to Alaska where they welcomed 2 more children, boys, and here her children recall their mom putting foil over the windows on the long days, full of light, so they would go to sleep. Next up was Clovis, NM, where 2 daughters brightened their lives. This stop was short as they heading back to Wichita for a few years, before another military transfer sent them to Las Vegas. Her life with Jerry was full of travel, many sights, and their love for each other was evident by the life they lived. They had a strong faith in the Lord, and it was this faith that got Bernadine through the next phase of her life as Gerry was killed in a car accident in 1967.
After this, she brought her family back to Wichita and began work at TWECO Products, where she helped in the production of welding guns, until she retired. In the meantime, she met Robert "Bob" Hoppes and the pair wed on March 25, 1969. He too was in the Air Force and though she was the older woman by 12 years (she would have said, "it was that red hair," that caught his eye), he took to being a father to her children like it was meant to be. Bob spoiled his bride with movies, dinners, and dancing as well as trips to Pike fish in Canada. Other time was spent camping with the family at the Lake of the Ozarks and they enjoyed the entertainment of Hershey's Park in Pennsylvania. They lived life together for 40 years before his passing in August of 2009 and Bernadine will rejoin Bob as she will be laid to rest next to her dancing partner.
Bingo was a past time enjoyed by her and others that joined. She was a proud President Trump supporter who wore her hat to show support when out in town, and the luck she held, came through when she won with each lottery ticket played.
Family is really where life mattered as 22 grandchildren, 33 greatgrandchildren, and 3 great greatgrandchildren came with fun as they enjoyed riding on the cart at the store with Grandma Hoppy. She lit up every time they were around, and her infectious laugh will always be remembered.
Bernadine passed away on Friday, December 25, 2020 at the age of 88. She will be remembered for her generosity, her ability to listen and give advice when you needed to talk, and she was a strong, independent woman whose genuine soul will be missed.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM, with burial to follow. All at at Lakeview Funeral Home & Cemetery, 12100 E 13TH ST N, WICHITA, KS 67206,
