Bertha passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. She was preceded in death by her sister, Susie Tower, her brother, Madison Jenkins, Jr., Father, Madison Jenkins, Sr., and Mother, Elizabeth Jenkins.
Bertha graduated from Carver High School in 1953 and attended Alabama State University. Bertha confessed her love for Christ at an early age and was active in her church, Rosa L. Parks Avenue Church of God. She met and married Gerald Woodson in March of 1956, moved to Hutchinson, KS, Gerald’s hometown and later to Wichita and made their home there. To this union three children were born, a daughter, Sheila Booker, a son, Lyndon Woodson, and daughter Tamara Woodson-Smith. They briefly attended St. Paul AME Church and then joined 9th Street Church of God, where she was active as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, usher, choir member, vacation bible school teacher, served on the pulpit committee and was instrumental in starting the youth outreach ministry. Bertha was a diligent and committed advocate for the Word of God. She took every opportunity to expose and show the love of Christ to everyone she encountered.
Bertha took joy in being a housewife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was meticulous in all that she put her hand to. She was an excellent housekeeper, everything had a place, bugs, dust bunnies and disorganization had no place in her home. She was an impeccable dresser, her hair always in place, always modest and always a lady.
Her main occupation was a homemaker. She also worked outside the home as a teacher’s aide, receptionist, private duty nurse and she sold Avon. She was a talented seamstress, painter, crafter, and gardener. Her work always had an elegant touch.
Bertha leaves a legacy of faith in God. Her compassion and love for others was only exceeded by her love for her family. The memories of Bertha will be cherished by her husband of 65 years, Gerald A.
