Carolyn Gwen Toomey was born on February 27, 1949, in Elk City, Oklahoma, to Reverend Paul and Mrs. Evelyn Davis. They moved to Kansas when Gwen was 5 when her father accepted the Pastorate of First Baptist Church, Haysville.
Gwen (she always preferred "Gwen" to Carolyn) went to school in Haysville and graduated from Campus High School in 1967. She then attended Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas. On June 2, 1968, she married Larry Toomey whom she had known since she was 5 years old.
Their marriage was blessed with three children, Christopher, Patrick and Caitlan. Her children gave her six grandchildren, Luke, Layton, Penelope, Emilia, Norah, and Ava.
For 22 years she served as preschool ministries director at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Wichita.
She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, sister, brother-in-law, nieces and nephew.
She died after a prolonged illness on Easter Sunday 2026.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, at Lakeview Funeral Home, with the family present. Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Lakeview Funeral Home, 12100 East 13th Street North, Wichita. Graveside services will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Garden of Gethsemane.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Eastminster Presbyterian Church Preschool, 1958 North Webb Road, Wichita, Kansas 67206.
