Delores (Dee) Elaine Casement was born to Ora Valera (nee Howard) and Eugene Leroy Steinmetz in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Her childhood years were split between Illinois and California often living with grandparents, aunts, and cousins perhaps contributing to her strong devotion to extended family and her willingness to help others whenever she could.
She moved to Wichita, Kansas as a teenager and made it her lifelong home. She caught the eye of John (Casey) Carl Casement and he decided she was a keeper and they married on November 27, 1949 and enjoyed 47 years together before his death in 1996. Dee was a busy (very busy) mom of three children all born within three years - two rambunctious boys and one semi-rambunctious girl. She had plenty of energy because not only did she keep the kids fed and mostly in line, but she kept a lovely home, played in a Bridge club, played golf, and square danced several nights a week with Casey. She later returned to work as a bookkeeper for a law firm. Her final six years were lived at Homestead Estates Assisted Living where she continued to enjoy life and make new friends.
The most important things about Dee’s life are invisible to see. If you spent any time with her at all, you quickly discerned her good nature in almost any circumstance. She often showed up when needed and quietly did what she could to help. She brought so much life to those around her. She didn’t want to inconvenience others and would put their needs above her own, even waiting to call 911 till morning so EMS wouldn’t have to come out in the middle of the night (twice - she did that twice).
She was often involved in quiet little rescue attempts that made big differences for others and can never be measured. She cooked evening meals for a neighbor for three years. She provided chewing tobacco to an Uncle who didn’t think she knew about his habit; but, she recognized he could no longer go buy it for himself, so she quietly slipped it in with the groceries she brought him each week. She listened well, holding and keeping the joys and pains of her family and friends.
Her laughter was glorious and lit up a room. Her story would not be complete without acknowledging her many, many moments of feisty fun - let’s be a little naughty, but not too naughty. She acted like she was getting away with high crime in sneaking candy into the movie theater. She had a knack in stretching the truth just a bit or bending the rules slightly when it seemed best to her to do so (or when the grandkids would enjoy it). She would do it, and then wink. In her mind speed limits represented a starting guideline. She was a collector (a keeper, if you will). She collected lipstick, jewelry (especially earrings), shoes, art, cardboard boxes, clothes, candy dishes, newspaper articles, recipes; keeping it all highly organized. When she found clothes she liked, the goal was to get it in every color.
She was a keeper. She kept family and friends close in her heart. We will keep her memory alive in our hearts.
Dee is predeceased by her husband Casey, and her parents Gene and Valera. She is survived and greatly missed by her son Randy, son Russell, daughter Bonnie (Bruce), grandchildren Jesse, Ryan, Greg (Sarah), Jennifer (Ryan), Carrie (Zenon), Taylor (Velora), Curtis (London) and great-grandkids Mackenzie, Conner, Graham, Taylor, Avery, and Declan.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 8, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Homestead Estates Senior Living of Wichita, 10550 E 21st St N, Wichita, KS 67206.
