

Edwin “Red” Burdette Stephens, resident of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully at home August 9, 2025. Red was born on October 10, 1932, in Hollis, Oklahoma to Earnest and Janie (Moss) Stephens. He had eight brothers and sisters, AJ, Erma Lou, Hershel, Dewey, Denzil, Mary, Willie, and Ramon Stephens.
Red graduated from Alpena High School and continued his academic career at John Brown University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree. In 1953 Red enlisted in the army and worked for two years as a Combat Engineer in the Engineer Battalion. After the military he worked for Boeing for 13 years and Cessna for 22 years.
Red and Fern had two children together, Gary and Larry. They were married for 65 years at Fern’s passing. Fern and Red were active members with the Bethel Life Center and often volunteered to prepare and serve meals at the church. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on rental houses.
Red is survived by his son, Larry (Gina) Stephens; seven grandchildren, Alex, Eric, Isaac Stephens, Jason Phillips, Alysha Besperat, Brooke Bramlett, Kayla Corbett and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; all eight of his siblings; his wife, Fern Stephens; son, Gary Stephens and his granddaughter, Keely Stephens.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 14, from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 W. Hwy 54, Wichita, KS 67209. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 18, at 11:00 AM at the Bethel Life Center, 3777 S. Meridian Ave., Wichita, KS 67217 with burial held at Resthaven Gardens of Memory, Monday at 2:00 PM.
