A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 20 at Peace Lutheran Church in Andover, Kansas. Interment will follow at the Andover Cemetery.
Eileen was born in Canton, Kansas on September 16, 1932 to William Oscar and Edna Hattie (Heim) Lehner. She grew up on a farm south of Canton and graduated high school in 1950. Eileen went to St. John’s College in Winfield, Kansas to become a teacher. She began teaching at the Lutheran school in Topeka, Kansas, followed by teaching in Wichita. Eileen married Carroll Dean Liechti on June 16, 1957 and to this union were born three children, Jeffrey, Teresa and Kevin. She put her teaching career aside for a time to raise her children, but returned to the field of education as a paraprofessional for USD 259 until her retirement in 1992. While raising a family Eileen would spend the summers working in her garden, which always yielded many vegetables to can or freeze. She also enjoyed needlepoint and cross stitch. Bowling was an important hobby to both Eileen and Carroll, each bowling in many leagues over the years. She was able to travel with Carroll often to watch him bowl in the national ABC bowling tournament. In her later years, baking cookies during the holidays was a favorite pastime. Throughout her lifetime Eileen attended the Lutheran church, and has been a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Andover for many years. Eileen lost her beloved husband on November 1, 2004. After Carroll’s death, Eileen remained active in the church, continued to bowl for a number of years, and even traveled with her daughter Teresa on several occasions. A few years ago Eileen was diagnosed with Alzhiemer’s disease and eventually required more care. In 2019 she moved to Wheatland, Wyoming to live with Teresa, who cared for her until her death.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents William and Edna, her husband Carroll Liechti and her brother John.
She is survived by her son Jeffrey (Tish) Liechti of Tekamah, Nebraska; Teresa Liechti of Wheatland, Wyoming; Kevin (Tracy) Liechti of Rose Hill, Kansas; five grandchildren, Kristan, Lauryn, Megan, Madison and Ian.
Memorials have been established with Peace Lutheran Church, Lutheran Hour Ministries and Alzheimer’s Association.
