During his high school years, he was involved with FFA before graduating from Houston High School in 1955. He began his truck driving career in Wichita, hauling bricks to build the Sedgwick County courthouse. From there he moved to Idaho with his brothers, Don and Jerry, in the logging industry. After several years, he moved back to Wichita where he was employed with Yellow Freight Systems for many years. He finished his trucking career hauling hay to Missouri and firewood back to his woodyard.
He met LaNelle in early 1970, while she was working at Pawnee Plastics and they married October 9, 1970, in Braman, Oklahoma. They made Wichita their home until moving to Peck in 1981.
Ervin was an avid deer, quail and pheasant hunter and pursued that with his father, father-in-law, brother and sons until he was no longer able. He loved westerns, especially Louis L'Amour, and had a full collection of his leather-bound books that he read over and over. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and he was always doing for others.
He made his choice to serve the Lord in October of 1971 at convention in Perry, Oklahoma and remained true to that choice for the rest of his life. He loved to have the workers in his home and enjoyed fellowship with them and the many friends he met with. In his last years his testimony always included the importance of the things that were true. Those things were very important to him and came out even when his memory failed him on other things.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Doris Hancock; his brothers, Don, Jerry and Kenny; his sister, Margie Kiser; and grandsons, Remington Hancock and Tyler Melton.
Ervin is survived by his brother, Ralph (Claudia) Hancock; wife, LaNelle; sons, Scott (Lori) Hancock and 3 sons of Shawnee, Kansas, Philip (Tina) Hancock and Kevin (Cari) Hancock, both of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Susan Reed (Amy Melton) of Ada, Oklahoma; grandchildren: Rebecca Morse (Austin), Nicole Morse, Brittany Melton, Laramie (Heaven) Reed, Adelia Hancock, Sadie Reed, Spencer Hancock, Kelsey Hancock and Alexander Hancock; 5 great-grandchildren; and numerous family and friends.
A visitation will be held Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a funeral service at 3:00 pm, Friday, January 17, 2025, and interment to follow in the Garden of Love. All at Resthaven Mortuary and Gardens of Memory, 11800 W. Hwy 54, Wichita, Kansas 67209.
