Eula Jean Moyer was born on April 12, 1923 to her parents, Chris and Lilly Heit. She had two younger sisters, Ina and June, and one brother, Gary who is here today. He was almost 20 years younger than the girls and Jean always said she didn’t think his feet touched the ground his first 3 years of life because they all carried him everywhere. They were so happy to have a baby brother. Gary and Jean were particularly close, he went to live with her and her husband Claude when their parents passed.
Claude and Jean were married 33 wonderful and happy years. They were fun loving and adventurous and traveled throughout the United States in their camper with their dog Bea after he retired. Jean told us she loved the state of Virginia the best and that was confirmed when the only travel memorabilia we found in her things was two travel booklets from Virginia. One of her favorite hobbies was painting scenery on canvas and there is one on display today. Jean cared for Claude for over a year when he became ill until his passing in 1991.
After his passing, Jean moved on her own from Texas back to Wichita where she lived in her duplex on Greenway Blvd by the Arkansas River for over 20 years. She loved to watch the geese by the river when she did her daily walking. She was strong, independent and sharp as a tack. She drove herself everywhere including church every Sunday until she was 93 years old. At that time, she decided it was time to “have someone else do the cooking and cleaning” for her and moved to Chaucer Estates assisted living where she was the life of the party and walked the halls to stay fit. She loved spending time with her dear friend Melva and would care for Melva’s pet bird when Melva was ill.
This past year she lived at Kansas Christian Home in Newton. The staff loved caring for her, and she always made them feel appreciated. They commented how she was always so “put together,” every morning. She did her makeup and hair and was dressed so nicely. She loved Sunday church services there in front of the big stained-glass window. Her sister-in-law Sue described her as a Grand lady and that fit her perfectly right to the end.
Her nephew Steve visited her often throughout the years …she loved to be “surprised” by his visits and worried about him on “those motorcycles.” Sue visited and checked on her often and she loved the black and khaki “Bob’s” shoes she gave her and those were the only shoes she wore in the summer. She spent each Christmas with her niece Sondra and enjoyed celebrating with her family. Jean celebrated every Thanksgiving with Lora and made her famous marshmallow cream fudge that everyone fought over to take home. Lora would take her to her doctor appointments and be amazed at how tough she was when she got her eye injections. After her appointments, she liked to eat a PLAIN hamburger, just the meat and bun, followed by a vanilla ice cream cone. She also enjoyed going to Red Rock Canyon Grill for their meatloaf, glazed carrots and deviled eggs, especially on her birthdays. Gary, Deb, Lora and Karen enjoyed this time with her.
We all wanted one more birthday with her, but she became ill in March and passed away peacefully at Newton hospital surrounded by family on Saturday April 10. So, she celebrated her 98th birthday in Heaven on Monday, April 12.
