Florianne Woods, age 75, retired High School Teacher entered into eternal rest on Friday, December 8, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She entered this life on September 7, 1948 to Victor and Thérèse (Converset) Staatz in Wichita, Kansas.
Florianne taught French and Spanish for more than 50 years, starting her career in Raytown, Missouri, moved to Belle Plaine High School, then taught at Campus High School for more than 22 years before retiring for the first time. She went on to teach at Augusta High School and finished out her career at Derby High School. In her early years of teaching, Florianne led a folk dancing group of her students, started Club International for all language students, and served as a class sponsor for many years. She volunteered many hours for Harbor House, a ministry of Catholic Charities, and was a long-time member of St. Michael Catholic Church. At her parish, she was a lector and served on the stewardship committee. She served in Altar Society, and taught Faith Formation classes. During the 1980’s and 90’s, Florianne spent her time volunteering with Girl Scouts, leading Troop 68 in Mulvane, as well as serving as Neighborhood Chairman for several years. She spent summers taking the troop on camping trips, as well as out of state adventures to Colorado and the Grand Canyon. Florianne was a world traveler, and offered numerous opportunities for her students to travel abroad. She visited 18 countries, including Iceland, England, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, France, Monaco, Lichtenstein, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Mexico, and Costa Rica. She also took students to Montreal, Canada, San Antonio, Texas, and New Orleans, Louisiana. She attended numerous World Language conferences during her teaching career, presenting workshops and sessions across the country.
She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Patricia Staatz. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Leon; son, Mark Woods (Denise); two grandchildren, Eric and Emily Woods; daughter, Camille Woods; sister, Rebecca Rumley (Ray); nieces, Renée Rumley Saunders and Rhonda Rumley Barloon (Linus); nephew, Raymond Rumley; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
A rosary service for Florianne will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 9:30 AM at St. Michael Catholic Church, 525 E. Main, Mulvane, KS, 67110, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM with burial to follow at Mulvane Cemetery. Family will receive guests before the rosary. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in memory to Harbor House Domestic Violence Shelter, PO Box 3759, Wichita, KS 67201, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
