Gary Geren, born on September 12, 1952, passed away on June 2, 2024 in Wichita, Kansas. He leaves behind a legacy of love and adventure, cherished by his two sons, Aaron Geren and Andrew Geren, his daughter-in-law Jill Geren, and his grandson Brandon Geren. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Norma Geren.
Gary spent over 25 years soaring the skies as an airline pilot for several airlines, including Air Midwest, Mesa Airlines, Access Air, and US Airways. His passion for aviation extended to his role as a Flight Instructor for Flight Safety, where he inspired many pilots from around the world with his kind personality, expertise, and enthusiasm for aviation.
Gary grew up in Haysville, Kansas and graduated from Campus High School where he played drums in band and pursued a career in law enforcement. He shortly served as a Deputy Sheriff for Sedgwick County, but ultimately pursued his true passion as a pilot. His piloting skills were vast, spanning from small Ultralights to the majestic Boeing 737. There wasn’t an aircraft Gary couldn’t fly or teach someone else how to fly. He flew many different large and small aircraft including Beech 1900s, King Air 350s and Boeing 777s, among others.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gary found joy in life's simple pleasures. He had a deep affection for old western TV shows and loved watching the Kansas City Chiefs (even during all the years they weren’t winning Super Bowls). He also had a unique passion for collecting eagle statues, often expressing his wish to be reincarnated as a Bald Eagle so he could fly anytime he wanted.
However, Gary's greatest love was his family. He treasured every moment spent with them, leaving behind memories that will be cherished forever. He never missed the opportunity to take his boys to every air show to watch the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds. At almost every family gathering, Gary could be found with a video camera capturing every special moment. His kindness, gentle demeanor, and love for his family will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Captain Gary’s legacy will continue to soar in the hearts of his loved ones, as he embarks on his final flight.
