Helen Jean Barnes
May 5, 1928 – December 4, 2018
Helen Jean Barnes, age 90, of Wichita, Kansas, moved from her earthly home to her wonderful heavenly home, built by the hand of God, on Tuesday, December 4, 2018. Helen was born May 5, 1928, in Corbett, Texas. Just after her high school graduation, on August 31, 1946, she and David Barnes were married. After 9 years of marriage, they were thrilled to welcome their long-awaited child, Julie, while living in Texas.
After moving to Wichita for several years, they settled in Oklahoma City. Helen worked for Vulcraft Steel Company as an administrative assistant for over 25 years. After retiring, she and her siblings enjoyed traveling together to many places and family reunions. She was an accomplished seamstress, baker, and enjoyed handcrafts. Helen worked alongside her husband, faithfully serving their church in Oklahoma in Sunday School classes and organizing funeral dinners.
A year after her beloved David went to be with the Lord in 2012, Helen moved to be with her family in Wichita. She spent the past five years enjoying birthday parties, programs, family gatherings, holidays and being “Nana” to her 11 great grandchildren. She truly enjoyed her church family at MorningStar Community Church in Wichita and participated in as many activities as she could. She was beloved for her kind heart and caring spirit, greeting everyone with her beautiful smile.
At the age of 12, Helen trusted Christ for her salvation and was baptized. Her steadfast faith throughout her life was an example to all she knew.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, David W. Barnes Jr; parents, Truman and Opal Elmore; brother, Don Elmore; and sisters, Dorothy Brewer and Billie Goodson.
She is survived by her daughter, Julie (Paul) Libel; sisters, Wanda Little and Jacquline Kirn; grandchildren, Ryan (Michael) Libel, Nicole (Derek) Hale, and Kristen (Lane) Doty; great grandchildren, Abigail, Rebeccah, Natalie, Isabella, Greyson, Tallis, and Cecilia Hale, and Landon, Hudson, Paxton, and Kensington Doty.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2018, from 3-5pm at Resthaven Mortuary. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 10, 2018, at 11:00am at MorningStar Community Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to MorningStar Community Church, located at 11010 E. Kellogg Dr. N; Wichita, KS 67207.

Warm thoughts and prayers to the Libel and Hale families. Each of you are so kind and loving. I hope this day fills your soul with peace and your heart with gratitude for the well-lived life of your beloved Nana.

Another of my dear friends has gone on to be in her permanent home. I'm reminded that we who know Jesus are pilgrims and strangers on this earth and each of us is longing for the day that we will shed this old worn out body, as Helen has, and receive a new, resurrected one. Dave and Helen are together now, with Jesus, forever.
I look back with fond memories over the years that I knew the Barnes family as close friends and associates in business. Our Lord tells us to "be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life". (Rev. 2:10) Helen now is enjoying the fulfillment of that promise!

I have so many wonderful memories of Helen that I hardly know where to start. First, she was my second mother for a lot of years, and I know for a fact we made her very nervous with some of our escapades, Julie. I remember telling you I knew how to make gravy, and after we poured about five or 6 cups of flour into the skillet and couldn’t get it to thin out, we decided that we had figured out how to make paste! Gotta always make that lemonade out of the lemons! Helen was always so beautiful, and I thought she looked like a movie star. She was a star to me, and I loved her very much and will miss her, along with all her family, dearly. I’m praying for all of you.

Mom and I are taken back by this news. So glad we got to visit with you all at Billies funeral. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you. Mom just got her hip replacement or we would be there for the beautiful service of your beautiful momma. Hugs to all the family.

Helen was such a dear friend and neighbor, I loved our visits whether we were standing in the driveway or sitting in the rocker watching the news, she was always sharing stories of her time with family and her eyes lit up each time she mentioned her grandchildren . Every day I drive by I think of my dear friend and wish I’d spent more time with her. I will miss her smile, her hugs and our visits but I’m happy she lived a long life and is now with our Lord. Rest In Peace sweet Helen, your family is in our prayers 🙏.
