James H. Monroe, age 94, of Wichita, Kansas passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2021. James was born in Highland Park, Illinois on June 14, 1926 to Paul B. & Caroline Monroe. He was the third of seven children.
Jim was a Combat-Wounded World War II United States Marine Corps Veteran, and was awarded two Purple Hearts for injuries received during the battles of Saipan & Guadalcanal. After the war he served as a railway mail clerk for the USPS from 1951-1969, later retiring from the USPS in Wichita, Ks in 1984. During his time at the Post Office he continued to work a large variety of side jobs.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Monroe, older sister Caroline Cronan, younger brother John Monroe and two grandchildren.
Survived by his current wife Betty Monroe, eleven children: James Monroe, Donald Monroe, Teresa (Monroe) Boyack, Marian (Monroe) Roberts, Mark Monroe, Kevin Monroe, Mary (Huffman) Crouse, Marvin Huffman, Andrea (Huffman) Wagner, Jody (Huffman) Wagner, Paul Huffman, 39 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 8 great great-grandchildren. Also survived by his older brother Paul B. Monroe II; sisters Virginia (Monroe) Schutz, Julett (Monroe) Broadnax, Martha (Monroe) Hughes, and sister-in-law Tommie (Duncan) Monroe.
A Recitation of the Rosary will be held Monday June 21, 2021 at 7 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 149 S. Millwood Wichita, Kansas 67213. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday June 22, 2021 at 9:30 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Graveside Service will be held at 1:30 pm at St. Mary's Cemetery in Newton, Kansas.
