Anyone who knew Jeri, affectionately known as Meme to her grandchildren, knew she had a special gift for making life more entertaining. She gave us countless reasons to laugh, and some of our favorite memories of her are the little moments that were so perfectly, unmistakably Meme.
One unforgettable moment happened at Lexi’s Butler Community College graduation. As we stood watching the ceremony, a flock of birds flew overhead, and Meme genuinely wondered aloud if the birds were part of the program. It was one of those moments that left us laughing, and it will forever be one of our favorite memories of her.
We can still hear her enthusiastic voice exclaiming, “Oh goodie, goodie, goodie, goodie, goodie!!!!” We remember her watching Lexi play Animal Crossing on the Wii and disapproving when she used the net to hit the other characters. She also had a way of randomly announcing, “I don’t know. I just work here,” as if she were simply a bystander in the comedy of everyday life.
Then there was the time she described someone by saying, “This woman was a devout Christian and was drinking Red Bulls.” Only Meme could deliver a line like that and make it unforgettable.
There was one specific family game night complete with Meme accusing us all of cheating at Mexican Train Dominoes because she didn’t understand or particularly care for the rules. And she affectionately referred to her COPD as “copid,” another little Meme-ism that became part of our family’s vocabulary.
But perhaps the funniest memory of all was Meme’s signature denture trick. She would pop her dentures partway out of her mouth, and sometimes they would take things a step further and fall right onto the table. It was the kind of moment that could send everyone into uncontrollable laughter, and it is a memory we will cherish forever.
These stories may sound like little things, but they are the things that make a person unforgettable. They remind us of Meme’s humor, her quirks, her expressions, and the joy she brought into ordinary moments. She gave us more than memories; she gave us stories that will be retold at family gatherings, shared with future generations, and laughed about for years to come.
We will miss her voice, her unexpected one-liners, her funny observations, and all the little things that made her uniquely Jeri. Most of all, we will miss the laughter she brought into our lives.
Jeri was so much more than our mother and grandmother. She was our Meme, and there will never be another quite like her. We will carry her in our hearts, smile when we remember her, and keep her spirit alive every time we tell one of her stories.
We love you, Meme. Thank you for the laughter, the memories, and the gift of being unapologetically yourself. You will be missed more than words can say, but you will never, ever be forgotten.
