Born on December 18, 1956, in Wichita, Kansas, Jerry lived life with a fire in his soul and a whole lot to say. He was ornery in the best way—sharp-witted, full of stories, and never one to hold back his thoughts. If you knew Jerry, you knew where he stood. He had opinions, and he shared them—boldly, passionately, and usually with a good laugh (or a loving nudge) to go along with it. Whether it was about politics, how to fix something, or what someone really needed to do with their life, Jerry didn’t beat around the bush—but he always spoke from a place of deep care and conviction.
He shared 49 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Joan Martinez. Together, they raised two children: Zach Martinez (married to Andrea) and Jessica Mow (married to Joe). He was also the father to Chastity Hendricks (married to Jason) whom he loved very much. Jerry was the proud and loving grandfather aka “Shud” of Dylan, Anna, and Vivian—his greatest joys. He loved his grandkids with his whole heart and would do anything for them.
Jerry was also 28 years sober, which he attributed, with deep gratitude, towards his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His journey of sobriety not only transformed his own life, but impacted countless others along the way. He offered wisdom, support, and a listening ear to anyone fighting their own battles, becoming a beacon of hope and strength in the recovery community.
He leaves behind a legacy of faith, recovery, laughter (a sound we will never forget), and love that will live on in all who had the honor of knowing him. He will be missed more than words can say, but his spirit will live on in every joke and story told at the dinner table and every grandkid he made feel like the most special person in the world.
A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held Thursday, April 24th at 10:30 at The Well in Derby Kansas, filled with stories, shared memories, and the deep joy of knowing he is home with his Savior.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
