

ARMSTRONG, Jewel, 96. Jewel Agatha Armstrong passed away last Wednesday morning at the Masonic Home in Wichita. Jewel was born in a lumber camp in Mississippi to Marshall and Bernie Wood in 1918. In 1936 she was the salutatorian of her high school class in Dumas, Arkansas, and then attended Arkansas A&M College in Monticello, Arkansas. In 1939 she married Jackson A. Barton. They moved to Wichita in 1951. The marriage ended in 1954 and in 1955, she married Edward F. Armstrong.
Jewel was a teacher. It wasn’t her job, it wasn’t her profession, it was her life. She taught first and second grades at Webster, Stanley, and Enterprise elementary schools, and hundreds of boys and girls learned to read because she cared. She was a story teller who liked to make others smile. Jewel was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Myreta, her first husband, Jackson, and her husband, Edward. She is survived by her son, Darrell Barton and his wife, Marilyn, grandson, Jackson Barton and his fiance, Nadine Edwards, granddaughter, Carrie Barton Coutino and her husband, Omar Coutino, and great grandsons, Nathaniel and Matthew. Family and friends will gather between 5:00 and 8:00 PM on Monday, December 1, at Resthaven Funeral Home for stories and coffee. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 2 in the Resthaven Chapel at 1:00 PM.
