Dear Mrs. McKenzie and Danny,

I am sorry to hear about the death of your husband and father.  I remember our youth well.  Hours spent in the basement playing ping pong.  We were so blessed to have loving parents who allowed us to grow up in a good environment.  
Danny, hope you are alright and doing well.  Mrs. McKenzie, love you and may God bless you and your family.

JT was a good friend of my mother, Janet Skinner.  She used to work for him as a bookkeeper at the Wichita Cabinet Company for a few years.  After that, he brought joy to her every year when he called her every September to wish her a happy birthday.  And from viewing some of these entries, it appears he did that for many friends.  Janet died in December, 2009.  God Bless your family during this difficult time.

My Condolences to all the Mckenzie Family. J.T. was a fun person to be around and a good Realtor. He knew everyone and even put countertops in my house. He never missed a Birthday and was always giving me the business and telling me jokes. He will be missed by all he was a good man.

Uncle Jade was one of my heroes.  

He was extremely friendly and happy with life.  He knew more people than one could imagine and would always take the time to make an introduction and explain how he knew them.  He came by our house pretty often, giving us the opportunity to learn from his remarkable social skills.  He was very good to my parents.

I was very fortunate to get the chance to play golf with him over the years. I'd look him up every time I came to town and we'd go to Mac, Sims or Wichita State. He taught me how to play and to appreciate a game for a lifetime.  He taught me how to change from work pants into golf shorts in the parking lot at the course, and to swing away at the first tee to catch up with our group that was already down the fairway (we'd just pay our green fees at the turn). I once told him what a Babe the young gal was behind the snack counter at McDonald Park - he immediately walked me to the counter and took it upon himself to introduce me.  I figured he knew her, until she mentioned her name was "Karen and not Debbie" as he'd called her.

When he decided to put away his clubs for good, he explained that he was going to devote that energy and time to his grandchildren.

He'd scurry up a softball game at a family reunion that ended up with 20 people playing defense on the field at a time.  We had the good fortune of playing with all the cousins and Aunts and Uncles.  As mentioned in another memory, he would take us on fishing trips that were the highlights of our summers.  I can only imagine the smiles on the faces and glee in the hearts of his sisters, when he asked if he could take all the boys away for 3 - 4 days to go fishing.  He'd already convinced his brothers and several brother in laws to come along and enjoy the adventure.

He was generous with his time and energy, loyal to his mission and adored Aunt Peg and their children.

A great man has been laid to rest.

Suzanne and I are very sorry we missed the rosary and funeral Mass.  It would have been an honor to attend.  We have such fond memories of Mr and Mrs McKenzie and their children.   The McKenzies will be in our prayers!!  God Bless Chris and Suzanne Bryde

Dear Danny & Kevin, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I have many great memories of the old neighborhood and all the baseball games at the field. Your dad was such a nice man.  He will be missed.

Mrs. McKenzie, I am so very sad to hear of John's passing. You have such a wonderful family, I am so sorry.

I will always remember Uncle JT's smile and his friendly ways.  He was the most impressive people person in my life.  He knew more people than I could ever imagine.  I will never understand how he was able to remember so many peoples names and tidbits of their lives.   I was in awe as I observed his gift of connecting with people regardless of where he was or what he was doing on numerous occasions and consciously made an effort to learn from him.  

JT was probably the most frequently visible uncle during my childhood.  During my grade school years, I remember his home movies of all the cousins on Holiday gatherings.  I remember when we topped the hill over Seneca on 54 Hwy and he turned the car engine off to save gas while we coasted to the intersection at Market St.  I remember jumping on the trampoline in their backyard and shooting hoops on the basketball goal on the roof over the garage before we ever had our own basketball goal. 

 I remember JT taking a carload of cousins on a few fishing trips.  I would never have guessed that JT knew anything about fishing on our first trip.  I remember him driving down dusty roads and me wondering where in the heck is he taking us, when out of the blue he stops at a low water bridge.  The water was clear and couldn't have been more than a couple feet deep.  I didn't see any fish and I told him so, but he insisted there were so we drug out our poles, baited our hooks and threw in our lines.  Sure enough, we caught a few catfish and bluegills that were hiding under the concrete lip on the downstream side of the low water bridge.  I was amazed. 

I remember JT going to mass at St Joe on weekdays.  

I remember when JT and Uncle Tom opened the first Angee's Pizza Royal and when he owned and operated the cabinet shop.  

After finishing college and moving to KC, I considered myself very fortunate to have taken the opportunity to play golf with Uncles JT and Bill.  After finally joining them I was amazed at how much fun I had and after that I tried to take the opportunity more often.  I was really bummed when JT had surgery on his knees and quit playing.  I wish I'd figured this out years before I did and also wish I'd taken the opportunity to do it more often.

As I sit here writing this I'm remembering more and more good times when Uncle JT and all my other Aunts Uncles and cousins were around.  We sure had a lot of memorable times together.  

Uncle JT was a great one.  I expect he's up in heaven now, catching up with all his old friends and of course making new friends.
