Lloyd Wayne Schmidt, passed on August 16, 2026, at the age of 95. Born April 15, 1931, on his family's farm in Gillespie, IL. Lloyd was one of six children, born to Weye and Marie Schmidt.
Lloyd graduated from Gillespie High School. He served in the United States Air Force as a pilot for 20 years, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He served in Vietnam and he was awarded numerous medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Lloyd was married to Carol Lane on May 17, 1959, at March AFB in California. After retiring from the USAF, he worked as a test pilot for Boeing for 20 years; retiring in 1991. He and Carol enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, playing bridge and church activities. He also was a skilled woodworker.
For the past one and a half years, Lloyd had resided at Brookdale Assisted Living in Derby, where he made good friends and put together many jigsaw puzzles.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 65 years, Carol; his parents, Weye C. and Marie Schmidt; his brothers, Ray Schmidt and Carl Schmidt; and his sister, Eula Krug.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen (Joe) Doubrava of Derby and Janna (Steve) Haworth of Derby; son, Thomas (Wendy) Hundley of Posey, CA; brothers, Robert Schmidt of Gainesville, VA and Weye Schmidt of Gillespie; cousin, Mary (Norman) Engelke of Benld, IL; grandchildren, Daniel Faley of Wichita, KS, Samantha Faley of Overland Park, KS, Andrew (Heather) of Chanute, KS, Jennifer Haworth of Derby; David Faley of Tokyo, Japan, Ashley Doubrava of Wichita, Ian (Meghan) Hundley of Carson City, NV and Breanna January of Bakersfield, CA; and great-grandchildren, Koryn Crabtree, Colton Leo, Jackson Hundley, Zoey Crabtree, Zaedan Faley, Elise Haworth, Thomas Hundley, William Haworth, Margot Haworth and Elektra Faley.
A Memorial service for Lloyd will be held at 11:00am, on Monday, August 31, 2026, with visitation an hour prior, at Faith Lutheran Church, 214 S. Derby Avenue, Derby, Kansas 67037.
Committal with Military Funeral Honors will take place the same day, at Lakeview Cemetery in the Garden of Veterans at 2:00PM, 12100 East 13th Street North, Wichita, Kansas 67206.
