Martha was born to Rudolph and Malissa Lane in Wichita, KS. She grew up to be a strong, intelligent, vibrant young woman of strong Christian faith. She attended L’Ouverture Grade School and later graduated from East High School in 1947. Martha’s church home was Calvary Baptist Church where she was baptized and attended for several decades until she was no longer able to attend.
Martha worked in aircraft fabrication for over 35 years at Cessna Aircraft Company. You could always find Martha indulging in one of her favorite passions of sewing which she learned from her grandmother Martha Robinson. And she could really sew, often times making her own clothes as well as for family and friends. She also loved spending time with her best friends and family playing bridge and she was an accomplished singer although mostly in the comfort of her own home. Anyone and everyone who knew her could, without a doubt, say Martha was a lady as her name implies whom fiercely loved and was devoted to her family.
Martha was known for saying what she meant – and meant what she said. Her family knew that and, their words to her as a mom, grandmother, and friend: we remember all your words and wisdom! Thank you forever – and now may you rest in peace!
In her transition from this earthly life, Martha leaves footprints for her family to follow. Rejoicing in the memory of her life are her sister: Gwendolyn Hyatt of Altadena, CA; her children, William C. Stevens of Bloomington, CA, Janice L. Aziz of Wichita, KS; Rudolph H. Stevens of Oklahoma City, OK; Eric R. Stevens (wife Toni), of Atlanta, GA. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard Lane; husband, William C. Stevens Sr.; daughter, Malissa Diane Stevens; and niece, Sandra L. Payne.
