

Mattie Davis loved the Lord and her family. She loved to help people, to crochet and knit and teach others. She found joy in crocheting items to gift her family. She loved to make banana nut bread and she could cook some beans and hot water cornbread! Mattie was a military wife and lived in different states, as well as Spain and enjoyed speaking Spanish. She was a very independent and strong willed person and cared for her husband for 56 years of marriage and during his illness. Mattie and Fred raised a grandson together and were very involved within their church.
Mattie completed her education in 1977 in Wichita, KS and retired from the Wichita Public School District. She was a member of North Heights Christian Church and a faithful steward in the church as an usher and Sunday school teacher.
Mattie Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Fred D. Davis; parents, James Whiters Sr. and Irene Flowers Whiters; sisters, Susie Joyner, Luretha Reed, Elizabeth Wilson, and Hertha Myers; and brothers, Johnny Whiters, Willie Whiters, Roosevelt Whiters and James Whiters Jr.
To celebrate her memory, she leaves her sons, Melvin (Gloria) Whiters, Val Gene (Carol) Williams and Garland Davis; daughters, Travena (Robert) Jones and Faye Davis Manning; sisters, Janie Hayes, Odessa (Nate) Bunch, Ora Wynn, Helena Gaston, Ella Mae Brewer, and Christine Hood; bothers, Jonas Whiters and Abdul Kareem Hanson; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 am, Monday, June 13, 2022, with visitation one hour prior, both at Lakeview Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at Lakeview Cemetery in the Veterans Garden.
