Melvin was a grocery and food clerk for much of his life, working at Safeway. He worked his way up the ranks of the grocery store to become a store manager. He was also very active, even well into his twilight years, and was known to attend Mass every day at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ellen (Greenfield) Jarvis; daughters, Mary Hughes and Alice Patterson; and grandson, David Jarvis.
He is survived by his sons, Robert Jarvis and Paul Griffin; grandchildren, Sara (Curtis) Benninger, Ryan (Toni) Hughes, Courtney (Clinton) Hughes, Martha Jarvis, Daniel Jarvis, Hannah Jarvis, James Jarvis and Josiah Jarvis; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary. A Recitation of the Holy Rosary service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 20, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 132 S. Millwood Ave., Wichita, KS 67213; a Mass of Christian Burial will follow immediately at the same location. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, 1640 N. Maize Rd., Wichita, KS 67212, after Mass.
