Oneita Janice Creed of Wichita, KS, returned to the Lord after her decades-long fight with Crohn’s Disease led to an insurmountable battle with liver cancer. She was 81 years old. In her final days, Oneita shared, “I’ve had a wonderful life and a wonderful family.” Her family was everything to her.
Oneita was born on December 5, 1939 in Rozel, Kansas where she lived on the family farm and attended local schools, graduating from Rozel High in 1958, where she was crowned Homecoming Princess and was active in band and athletics. She married Curtis in 1956 and delivered their daughter, Terry Lynne, that next year in Camp Hanford, WA where Curtis was stationed in the Armed Services. After returning to Kansas, they welcomed Christine in 1960 and Bradley in 1962 to their family. Oneita was a loving mother who actively engaged her children in all her activities of daily living, once stating “I don’t understand all this ‘play-date’ scheduling with children, I just live life and my kids are part of it.” Her life was full of projects; according to her husband Curtis “Oneita was not afraid to tackle anything.” She could build sheds, sew quilts, refinish furniture, plant flowerbeds — and even drive a semi in support of the family business, Creed Auto Crushers. Oneita ably balanced family, home, and hobbies with professional work, including a career at Cessna Aircraft, and time as a real estate agent, ultimately retiring from the Sedgwick County tax office.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin & Letha Smith and her baby brother, Sonny who died in infancy before she was born. Oneita is survived by her husband, Clyde Curtis Creed of the home; daughters, Terry Lynne (Ralph) Hudgens of Wichita, KS and Christine Annette Lay of Watertown, CT; son, Bradley Curtis (Phyllis) Creed of Goddard, KS; sisters, Betty (Mervin) Robinson of Garden City, KS, Linda (Don) Pfalser of Mountain Home, AR and Twilla (George) Skelton of Temple, TX; grandchildren, Audrey (Andrew) Savikas of Boston, MA, Aaron (Courtney) Ruff of Springdale, AR, Samantha Layher of Watertown, CT, Marshall Ruff of Albuquerque, NM, Whitney McNown of Goddard, KS, Taylor Ruff of Albuquerque, NM, Clarissa Creed of Wichita, KS and Preston Ruff of Socorro, NM; and great grandchildren, Morgan Ruff of Springdale, AR, Taylor & Hanna Layher of Watertown, CT, Emrie Roberts of Goddard, KS, Adler & Ada Savikas of Boston, MA and Elijah Ruff of Albuquerque, NM.
