

Johnston, R. Rex, died August 10, 2010. Rex was born 20 January 1926 in Lyons, Kansas to James E. (Jenks) and Lottie O. Johnston. He lived in Lyons until 1942 when he moved with his family to Wichita. He graduated from East High School in 1944 and was immediately drafted into the Army where he saw combat duty in the European Theater with the 345th Infantry, 87th Division. He attended WSU and KSU under the GI Bill, where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. He worked for the Kansas Highway Commission as a design and construction engineer for 15 years. He finished his career as Deputy Civil Engineer at McConnell AFB, where he retired in 1992. He was active in his church and helped with several community service projects. He was a volunteer Boy Scout leader at both the Troop and Council levels. His hobbies were gardening, hunting, reading, and traveling. He is preceded in death by his wife Norma. Survivors are son Mike and wife Robyn of Longmont, Colorado, son Randy and wife Cynthia of Wichita, brother Max Johnston of Wichita and several nieces and nephews. Private services will be held. Memorials to Boy Scouts of America Quivira Council, and Kansas Humane Society.
