Rex was born and raised in Fairview, Oklahoma, and moved to Wichita as a teenager. He graduated from Southeast High School and Washburn University. He worked for Southwestern Bell until his retirement and later enjoyed working as a Realtor alongside his wife, Sharon.
Rex was a true gentleman, known for his good humor, his willingness to help others, and his ability to fix just about anything. He loved to travel, especially visiting national parks, taking cruises and enjoying shows in Las Vegas. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
Rex and Sharon were married in Key Largo, Florida, nearly 40 years ago. Together, they shared a life filled with family, travel and many adventures.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Dorothy Custer; his sons, Tim and James Custer; and his sisters, JoAnn Gerringer, Diana Krivanek and Joyce Wood.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon West; stepsons Greg West and Jason West (Sydney); three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
"Rex was such a good man." That simple sentiment captures the way those who knew him will remember him.
A private family celebration of Rex's life will be held later this month.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army in Rex's memory.
