Sister Mary Clare Doebel (Theresa Marie), 93, entered eternal life on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Marian Hall, Mt. St. Mary Convent, Wichita, Kansas. Sr. Mary Clare was born March 26, 1932, to Joseph and Hazel (Deeds) Doebel in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. She was the third child in a family of three girls and four boys who started their lives on a farm in Oklahoma.
Things changed for her when she was in the sixth grade when the family moved to St. Paul, Kansas where her father obtained a job at the sawmill. She finished her elementary years and began her high school years at St. Francis School in St. Paul, Kansas where she met the Sisters of St. Joseph. Going into her junior year of high school, she decided to enter the Sisters of St. Joseph in Wichita, Kansas on September 2, 1948. She received the habit and religious name of Sister Mary Clare March 19, 1949.
Her final profession was July 26, 1954. Sister Mary Clare was an excellent primary teacher. Her teaching career extended for 50 years. She taught in 11 different Catholic schools throughout the Catholic Diocese of Wichita and one Catholic school in Ponca City, Oklahoma. When she retired in 2000, she returned to Mt. St. Mary’s Convent and performed various ministries at home.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Hazel (Deeds) Doebel, two sisters, Dorothy Doebel and Philomena Blaes, and three brothers Herbert Doebel, Raymond Doebel and Ronald Doebel. Survivors include her brother Robert Doebel and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Homecoming will be Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. followed by the Wake Service at 6:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. All will be at Mt. St. Mary’s Convent, 3700 E. Lincoln, Wichita, KS 67218. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Dear Neighbor Ministries or the Retirement Fund for the Sisters of St. Joseph, 3700 E. Lincoln, Wichita, KS 67218.
