Sr. Mary Josephine Smith, CSJ

Smith, Sr. Mary Josephine, 90, was born in New Roads, LA on June 16, 1932 to Joseph Guarino, Sr. and Josephine Irnonnie Guarino. She entered eternal life September 12, 2022 in Marian Hall at the Wichita Center of the Congregation of St. Joseph in Wichita, KS.

She graduated from high school at St. Joseph Academy in New Orleans, LA Sept. 8, 1951, professed first vows March 20, 1953 and final profession took place Aug. 15, 1956. She graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans, LA with a B.S. in Education in 1965, followed by Montessori Certification in 1975. Her 46 years of teaching became a ministry which she dearly loved, especially teaching primary age children and the importance she placed on the Montessori method of teaching small children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Virginia Guarino Lorusso, Dr. Guy Guarino, and Russell Guarino.

In addition to her Sisters and Associates of the Congregation, she is survived by her brother, Joseph Guarino, Jr.

Homecoming will be September 20, 2022, 3:00 p.m. with the Wake to follow at 6:30 in Resurrection Chapel. A memorial Mass will be celebrated in Resurrection Chapel Sept. 21, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. The Wake and Funeral will be open for Sisters, Associates, Residents, Family and Close Friends.
