Velma Marie Clevenger, born January 1, 1931, in Kingsdown, Kansas, passed away surrounded by the love of the family she cherished throughout her long and beautiful life. Born to Elmer and Lucy Stofer, Velma grew up on the family farm alongside her older brother, Lloyd, where she learned the values of hard work, devotion, and kindness that would define her for the rest of her days.
A proud graduate of Kingsdown High School, Velma went on to attend Dodge City Junior College before choosing a different path—one led by love. She moved to Wichita to marry her high school sweetheart, Orville Clevenger, on December 24, 1950, beginning a marriage that would last a lifetime.
Velma first worked as a receptionist at the Wichita Clinic, but after the birth of their daughter Cindy, she devoted herself to raising their growing family. Rex soon followed, and Becky completed their trio of children. Velma poured her heart into motherhood, creating a warm and welcoming home filled with laughter, love, and the irresistible aroma of her famous homemade pizza—a family favorite made entirely from scratch.
In 1976, once her children were older, Velma returned to the workforce as a receptionist for a Wichita law firm, where she worked for eight years. Her kindness, reliability, and gentle spirit made her beloved by colleagues and clients alike.
Velma and Orville moved to their home in West Wichita in 1966, where they built deep roots in the community. That same year, they became members of Westwood Presbyterian Church, a congregation Velma faithfully remained part of for the rest of her life. Her faith, family, and friendships were the pillars that sustained her.
Velma loved nothing more than time spent with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even her “grandanimals.” She treasured family gatherings, holidays, and get togethers with her many in laws, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. Her warmth made everyone feel welcome; her presence made every gathering brighter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Orville, her brother Lloyd, and every in law from both her and Orville’s families.
She is survived by her children: Cindy Hagerty, Rex Clevenger (Gerrie'), and Becky Clevenger; her grandchildren Montana Lane (Travis), Matt Hagerty (Blaire), Chloe Clevenger, and Skyler Clevenger; and her great grandchildren Greyson, Bastian, and Winter.
Velma’s life was one of quiet strength, unwavering love, and deep devotion to the people she held dear. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured, the memories she created, and the love she gave so freely.
She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
A Funeral Service will be held at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita, KS 67209, US, on May 18, 2026, at 3:00 pm with a graveside service to follow in the Garden of Gospels.
