Verna was born in Alva, Oklahoma on Jan 9, 1921 to Eugene and Mabel Annette. Her early life was in southwestern Kansas and she graduated from Hugoton High School in 1939. She married Van in 1940 and they moved to Wichita to start a family and live a remarkable life far from their beginnings in southwestern Kansas. Verna worked for many years as a legal secretary starting in the office of the Clerk of the District Court, then for the law firm of Sowers Sowers Carson and Johnston. In 1985 she retired from the firm Johnston and Johnston. LLC. In their retirement years they traveled extensively in their motorhome visiting family all over the country. At home in Wichita Van and Verna were active Shriners, avid bowlers and golfers and enjoyed a busy full and active life surrounded by their large family. Family was always the center and focus of their lives.
She is survived by her daughter Nicki (Wayne) Didlake of Wichita, her son Rick Cox of Florence, Oregon, grandchildren Robert (Laura) Didlake, Teresa (Greg) Scott , Brenda (Rodney) Wright and Kirstin (John) Logsdon, great grandchildren Alex & Emily Didlake, Brandon (Kristen) Scott, Jerrica (Ryan) Selenke, Brianna (Micah) Bloyer, Dalton (Samatha) Scott, Hannah Scott, Kara & Aaron Wright, Cheyenne Gores, Amber & Jack Logsdon, great great grandchildren Titan, Athena & Zion Scott, Landrie, Breckyn & Banning Selenke, Adelaide & Flint Bloyer.
Verna was always a loving, grateful and loyal friend and will be remembered by those who were fortunate to know her. Her wit and humor were quick and endless, keeping family and friends on their toes. Her smile was full, bright and genuine. She enjoyed playing games, making quilts for all her many grandchildren and socializing with friends. She was especially accomplished in the game of Yahtzee and enjoyed highly competitive and heated matches with her grandchildren. Although she managed to win their dimes and quarters they always left the game as winners with more than they came with.
She will always be remembered and the truth is on her grave marker “Alway loving, always loved”.
