Vernon Dale Huckins, lovingly known as Vern, passed away on December 15, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 81. He was born on May 14, 1944, in Thomas, Oklahoma, to Dean and Nina Irene (Marshall) Huckins.
Vern grew up in Oklahoma and pursued higher education at Panhandle State University, now part of Oklahoma State University. In 1963, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving proudly as a Hospital Corpsman Third Class aboard the USS Constellation during the Vietnam era. His time in the Navy shaped his discipline, resilience, and commitment to helping others.
In 1980, Vern moved to Wichita to begin a position with the Baird Kurtz & Dobson accounting firm. A natural leader and problem-solver, he later became Vice President and CEO of Architectural Millwork in Hutchinson, Kansas. In 1998, he ventured out on his own, founding Advanced Consulting Solutions, where he provided payroll, tax, and accounting services to small businesses. Known for his willingness to barter, Vern built long-lasting relationships with clients who often became close friends. Even in retirement, he continued to support the people and businesses he cared about.
Vern lived a vibrant and active life. For many years he enjoyed square dancing, and more recently he found joy in country‑western partner dancing. He loved to “toodle” around his neighborhood in his road pedal car with his beloved teacup poodle, Tiki, riding beside him. Sailing was another great passion—he treasured time on the water with his children and family, and he especially enjoyed competing with his son Matt as his crew. In his later years, he added motorcycle riding to his list of adventures.
Deeply community‑minded, Vern was a charter member of the Bosin Society, dedicated to conserving and preserving the artwork of Blackbear Bosin. He proudly donated artwork to support its mission. He was also a charter member of the Cowry Shell Leadership Society of the Kansas African American Museum.
Vern is survived by his longtime companion, Caroline Helms; sister‑in‑law Shirley Huckins of Guymon, OK; his children Matthew Bryan Huckins (Mary), Ernest Carl Huckins, and Teresa Michelle (Young) Huckins (Tom); and grandchildren Victoria Huckins, Jo Young, and Isabel Huckins. He is also survived by nieces Carla Huckins, Tina Holmes (Scott), and nephew Darin Huckins; as well as his cherished poodle, Tiki.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Nida Huckins, his brother Ronald Dean Huckins, and nephew Kenny Huckins.
Vern will be remembered for his warmth, his humor, his generosity, and his unwavering dedication to family, friends, and community. His life was full of movement, curiosity, and compassion—and those who loved him will carry his stories and spirit forward.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bosin Society or the Kansas African American Museum, organizations close to Vern’s heart.
