Rev. Wesley “Wes” E. Butler, 88, went into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, August 21, 2010. Born September 7, 1921 in Stuttgart, Arkansas, he was the son of William and Marian (Allison) Butler. He grew up in Pittsburg, Kansas, and graduated from high school in 1939. He attended 1 1/2 years at Pittsburg State, 1 1/2 years at Southwestern University, Waxahachie, TX, and 2 years at Central Bible College in Springfield, MO.
He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy during WWII as an Aviation Machinist Mate First Class. Wes married Ima Jean Dorsey in 1950, the same year they were both ordained as Assemblies of God ministers. He served as pastor for 60 years in various states. “Pastor B” was known as a pioneer pastor because he started churches from scratch.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son and daughter Roger E. and Rebecca S. Butler; brothers Buford, Melford and Cecil Butler; sisters Lois Duncan and DeEtta Butler. He is survived by his wife Ima Jean Butler, Wichita; daughter Roberta (Marty) Gould, Haysville; son Kevin (Jennifer) Butler, Winfield; brother Dr. Herbert (Rhoda) Butler, Macomb, IL; grandchildren Jeremy, Brandon and Chad Gould and 5 great grandchildren.
Visitation with his family present will be from 6-8pm, Friday, August 27, 2010, at DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Saturday, August 28, 2010, at Bethel Life Center, 3777 S. Meridian, Wichita, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name with Assemblies of God World Missions, 1445 Boonville Ave., Springfield, MO 65802.
