On Thursday September 21, 2023 passed away at Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages after a long fight with cancer. She moved to The Villages in 2005 to be with her life partner and wife, Penny Schritz. Barbara was born at Murphy NC to the late Buster Gibson, and Azalea Davis. She had seven sisters and one brother. She was the seventh child of nine. She is preceded in death by her siblings, Louise Wilkinson, Frances Truitt, Betty Jean Ridge, Norma Lee Truet, and Harley (Hoot) Gibson. She is survived by her sisters Dorothy (Dottie) Marlin, Mary Helen Effler, Susie Reed, and many nephews and nieces.
Barbara graduated from Murphy High School in 1959. She played trumpet in both marching band, and also the orchestra. She played many sports in high school as well in the Army, which she join out of high school in 1959. She played softball, basketball, and bowling, and was on the All Army Bowling Team. She served her country in Baltimore Maryland, Germany, White Sands Missile Range, Oakland , Fort Gordon , Fort McClellan, and retired from Fort Devon’s Ma. 1988 as a Sergeant first class.
She belonged to the Tri-Country Women’s Veterans and Rainbow Family and Friends of The Villages.
In lieu of flowers it is requested that donations be made to the Cancer Society.
Celebration of Life will be held on November 11, 2023, from 11:00 until 3 pm. Taps will be played at Dignity, 7134 Powell Rd. Wildwood, Fl. 34785
