On April 29, 2026, Denis Abel Guenette embarked on his final journey without a map, destination Heaven. Given his well-known hesitancy to ask for directions, it is comforting to know that his angels were ready to guide him to the pearly gates, including his parents, Benoit and Yvette Guenette, his brother Daniel, his son Roy, and his grandson Brandon.
Denis’s earthly adventure began in August of 1950 in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. He was the eldest of three sons of Benoit and Yvette Guenette and proudly considered himself the best looking of the group.
The family later moved to Timmins in Northern Ontario, where Denis developed a deep love for the outdoors. As an adventurous and fearless kid, he embraced nature head on, building camps along well worn animal trails and somehow managing to coexist with bears and other wildlife. In true survivalist fashion, he took it all in stride, gaining stories and confidence that would stay with him for life.
Denis grew into a hardworking, lighthearted, and fun loving man. He was known for his ability to light up a room with his smile, along with a quick wit and a touch of sarcasm that kept those around him smiling. Whether at work or at home, he was often heard whistling as he went about his day, a playful soundtrack that those around him came to know and love.
It came as no surprise that Denis enjoyed working with his hands and developed many talents, including woodworking, building, remodeling, gardening, cooking, traveling, camping, and reading. He especially loved historical fiction, which became another way for him to explore the world.
During this time, Denis met the love of his life, Gaye, and the two spent 40 years together in a partnership built on love, laughter, and shared adventures. They were affectionately known as “The Bickersons,” a reflection of their playful banter and deep bond.
Denis had a generous spirit and gave his time freely to causes and communities that mattered to him. Whether he was volunteering with Rotary International, hosting exchange students, or simply stepping in to help wherever he was needed, he found joy in contributing and making a difference. He brought the same warmth and humor to his volunteer work that defined the rest of his life, connecting easily with others and leaving a lasting impression on those he served alongside.
Above all, Denis was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gaye; his two daughters, Loraine and her partner Eric, and Michelle; and his brother, Gilles and his wife Debbie. He was the proud “POP” to Justin and his wife Jordan, Kenny and his partner Skilar, Jagger, and his granddaughter Shyla. He was lovingly called “PAPA” by his great grandchildren, Octavia, Brinley, and Lennix. He also leaves behind a nephew and many nieces. He shared his love of fishing, not necessarily catching, camping, woodworking, and time spent in nature with his family, leaving a legacy that will continue for generations.
Denis also treasured the many friendships he built over the years. Whether on the golf course, gathering for “beer day,” out on the dance floor, or RVing, he brought energy, laughter, and a sense of fun wherever he went. His friendships were an important part of his world, and he leaves behind many who will miss not just the moments, but the joy he brought to them.
If the breeze feels a little warmer, the stars shine brighter, or you hear a familiar whistle drifting through the wind, you will know Denis is close by.
A celebration of Denis’s life will take place at Lake Okahumpka Rec Center, 4505 Okahumpka Run, The Villages, Florida from 4-7 on Saturday May 9, 2026. A dedication and words of reflection will begin at 5PM.
At a later date a celebration of life will be held in Sarnia, Ontario.
