Alonzo Alexander Taylor was born in Powhatan, Virginia on March 29, 1940 to the late Leonard Alexander Taylor, Sr. and Amy Walton Taylor. He departed this life in Williamsburg, Virginia on June 22, 2025 after a brief illness.
He was a graduate of Phenix High School in Hampton, Virginia. He attended Virginia State University. During his college days at Virginia State, Al played trumpet with a Rock-n-Roll band to earn money to pay his tuition. He was inducted into the Alpha Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He left college to join the U. S. Air Force where he served four years as an Air Operations Specialist with a tour of duty in Thailand. In 1967, he married, Gloria "Jeannie" and of this union, they had one, son, Mark. They relocated to Maryland, and he worked for Maryland National Bank, and Exxon Accounting Center while he was working full time and going to school at night to earn his A.A. degree from Community College of Baltimore in Business Administration. He graduated from Towson State University with a B.S. degree in Accounting/Finance. He began working for the State of Maryland in the Comptroller of the Treasury Office in Baltimore. During the tax season, he appeared on a local television station to answers questions about income taxes.
In 2000, he retired from state service and relocated to Williamsburg, Virginia. The area provided a wealth of activities both social and outreach programs for those in need. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was involved in other community projects. He travelled state side and abroad to experience the historical and cultural of aspects of places.
Al's many talents and creativity were exhibited by his numerous projects. His artistic ability was displayed in his oil paintings and drawings. Among his other talents were woodworking, repairing cars, house painting and fixing just about anything. He was very meticulous, and his work was of professional quality.
He leaves his loving wife of (58 years) Gloria; his, son, Mark, and granddaughter; Emma. Sisters; Reverend Shirley Potts; Josephine Gaskin; brother, Leonard Alexander, Jr. (Mimi); one aunt, Fannie Brown; uncle, Freddie Taylor, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins and other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on July 11, 2025 at 1:00pm at Greenbrier Baptist Church, 4731 Bell Road, Powhatan, VA 33139. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Meals on Wheels, a food bank, or a homeless shelter of your choice.
