Betty was born in Bristol, England February 19th, 1929 the eldest daughter of Harry and Rhoda Williams. She grew up in Bristol during the height of World War ll. At age 11 Betty and her sisters Joy and Maureen were separated from their parents and evacuated to Exeter to escape the Nazi bombings. After graduating from the Merrywood School in Bristol she met the only love of her life, Bill. They went on to celebrate 53 happy years of marriage.
In 1967 as a result of Bill’s new job the family boarded the Queen Elizabeth and immigrated to the United States settling in Brookfield, Connecticut. Bill and Betty retired to Williamsburg in 1996 and enthusiastically embraced their new Ford’s Colony community. Betty volunteered at Olde Town Medical Center, was active in the Ford’s Colony Craft Club, Quilt Guild, Garden Club, Travel Club and a close knit “Wine and Dine” group.
Following Bill’s death in 2005, she moved to the Eaglescliffe condominiums and became an active member of Solitaires. Betty had an enduring love of crafts and was an expert quilter, knitter and needle worker. She especially cherished creating pieces for her family and for local Williamsburg charities.
Betty is survived by her daughter Sally T. Modjeska and husband Gary of Bethesda, MD, her daughter Elizabeth M. “Liz” Breeckner and husband Gregory of Bluffton, SC and grandchildren Hilary, Ross and Tyler Modjeska and Ashley and Andrew Breeckner.
A celebration of life service will be held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 19th.
