Billie Sue Ellen Gale Hale - A woman of many names and much southern charm, to me she was "Nama." Nama always looked for the light in life. Whether it was singing ragtime by the piano, teaching us kids about history (the good and the bad), or just relaxing by the fireplace around the holidays in her rocking chair, whenever I was around my grandma I felt a sense of total calm and peace. She always gave us sweets as kids and took her time to share the stories of her experience. Learning about how she first met the love of her life, my Grandaddy, John Hale was one of the fondest stories I remember her sharing. The preacher's daughter, fit for a prom queen, sneaking around with the cadet at Virginia Tech, her prom king. Hearing it for the first time, and her speaking of their relationship with such reverence, it sounded like something out of a fairytale. They were truly a match made in heaven. Despite the world around us seemingly moving at a faster and faster pace overtime, Nama stayed cool and relaxed amidst the chaos. Life was sweeter, calmer, and softer with Nama around. A family recipe of cookies she kept alive through generations, “Mélanges” were pretty sweet too. I always looked forward to spending time around Christmas and those cookies were a sweet sign of the cheerful person she was, and an indicator that good things were on their way. While it hurts to think she's no longer with us here on earth, it's comforting to know she was a believer of the lord. She's probably enjoying prime rib in the kingdom of heaven right about now, having an absolute time full of laughter and love as she did in life.
