

Carel was active in the Episcopal church his entire life, most recently a member of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church and a lay reader. Carel served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He retired at the rank of Lt. Col. with 30 years of service. Carel continued his career as the chief flight instructor at Ft. Eustis and the Williamsburg Jamestown Airport. He had a true passion for flying and playing his Martin Guitar.
Carel attended the Virginia Military Institute and is a graduate from Embrey Riddle Aeronautical University. He was a member of the Military Officers Association and the VFW and Order Daidalians. He also served as president and secretary of the James-York Exchange and worked the last five years at Jamestown Island.
Carel is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Alice; son, William Carel Humme; daughters, Patricia Lawry Gill (William), Pamela Tracy Colonna (David); grandchildren, Sarah, Jesse, Ben, Sharon, Isaac; 10 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Jean Stutsman.
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 19, from 5pm to 7pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg. Services will be held at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, 331 W Duke of Gloucester St, Williamsburg, on Tuesday, May 20, beginning at 2pm. Carel will be laid to rest following the services at Bruton Parish Church Cemetery.
