Herm was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Above all else, he was a devoted family man whose greatest joy and pride came from the people he loved. His family meant everything to him, and he cherished every moment spent together. His kindness, wisdom, strength, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Herm is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mikki Heyn, his beloved partner throughout their long and beautiful life together. He is also survived by his sister, Barb Walker (Don); his children, Michele Gray (Fred) and Christine Clemson (Michael); his grandchildren, Tyler Gray (Taylor), William Clemson and his fiancée, Jayne, Nicole Gray, Clara Clemson and her fiancé, Jacob, Kaitlyn Gray, Travis Heyn, and Morgan Heyn; and his great-granddaughter, Taytum Gray.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary Heyn; his brother, Paul Heyn; and his son, Michael Heyn. He carried their memories, and the love he had for them, with him always.
Herm attended Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. After college, he proudly served in the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he began a successful career in sales before retiring at the age of 62.
Herm took great pride in the relationships he shared with those closest to him. As a husband, he was devoted and loving. As a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was supportive, caring, and always there when he was needed. He had a way of making those around him feel loved, valued, and cared for, and the memories he created with them will be treasured and carried on for generations to come.
Outside of his work and family life, Herm enjoyed spending time outdoors. He especially looked forward to his annual hunting and fishing trips, where he could enjoy nature, good company, and the simple pleasure of time spent with those he cared about.
Herm’s greatest legacy can be found in the life he built, the love he gave so freely, and the family he cherished above all else. He will be remembered for his generous heart, his unwavering devotion to those he loved, and the countless moments of happiness he shared with them. Though he will be deeply missed, his love and memory will live on through his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188, US, on October 14, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
