Caroline White Dozier, 104, passed away on September 18, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ike Dozier, a WWII veteran and prominent Toano farmer. The two had met in first grade and married in 1930. Together they owned and operated the historic Warrenton farm.
A longtime resident of Toano, Caroline held positions in a variety of businesses around the local area, including Colonial Williamsburg, Toano High School, and Peninsula Bus Lines, which was owned by her husband Ike’s family. Later, Caroline became a pioneer of the postal industry, serving as the state of Virginia’s first female postmaster in Toano. She was also a founding member of the Women’s Club of Toano, and had served as Secretary, Treasurer and President at different times.
Caroline was actively involved with Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, having served as Secretary and Register for the Vestry. In 1963, she was elected as vice-president of the James City County Chamber of Commerce, the first woman in James City County to hold the title. She enjoyed membership in many other organizations, including the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Peninsula Association for Tuberculosis, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which she had joined at 17 years old. She served on the Board of Trustees and the Executive Board of the Williamsburg Area Community Hospital, and was integral member of several other James City County organizations.
She will be missed by her son, C.W. Pete Dozier; her grandchildren, Bo Dozier and his wife, Tamara, Ben Dozier and his wife, Tracy, Betsy Sink and her husband, Kevin; great-grandchildren, Kenny Dozier, Jackson Dozier, Gavin Sink, Kaiden Sink, and Molly Dozier; as well as her very special friends, Betty Golderos and Rebecca Golderos.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 6:00 PM on Sunday, September 21 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg. Funeral services will be held at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, 8300 Richmond Rd., Toano on Monday, September 22 at 11:00 AM, with interment to follow in the Hickory Neck Church Cemetery.
