The Rev. Charles W. “Chip” Froehlich passed away peacefully on Tues., Sept. 15, 2026. A Lutheran minister for over 50 years, he and his wife, Kathy, retired to Williamsburg, Va., in 2013, where they were active members of King of Glory Lutheran Church.
Froehlich was born in 1947 to George and Loretta Froehlich in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The youngest of five children, he graduated from Concordia Milwaukee High School in 1966, Concordia College Milwaukee in 1968, Concordia Senior College of Fort Wayne (Ind.) in 1970 and Concordia Seminary in Exile (Seminex) in 1974 with a Master of Divinity (MDiv).
Froehlich’s vicarage year was spent in Minneapolis, Minnesota at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. He and Kathy and their infant son Tim ultimately moved east to Hicksville, N.Y., on Long Island for his ordination into full-time ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church on June 30, 1974.
Froehlich would move 10 exits - or 45 minutes east because of traffic - to St. Luke Lutheran Church at Dix Hills, N.Y., in December of 1979 to build and serve the congregation over the next 33 years. It is in Dix Hills where they established life-long friends and a love for New York. He also oversaw the growth of the St. Luke Preschool and Early Education Center.
A fervent Wisconsin Badger and Green Bay Packers fan, the people of St. Luke would send him and Kathy to the 1994 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He also would become a partial shareholder of his beloved Packers, keeping his ties to Wisconsin forever.
Froehlich became an active member of King of Glory as one of its retired pastors after the move to Virginia, serving it and many local and regional congregations as a fill-in pastor, keeping him busy doing what he loved - ministering to people and making life-long connections. It was also during this time that he spent many hours at the Lackey Clinic in Yorktown, Va., spending time with those who needed the good word of God during difficult times of life.
Froehlich is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathleen; his sons, Timothy (Sarah) of St. Louis, Mo., Daniel of Memphis, Tenn. and Peter of Montgomery, Ala.; his four grandchildren, Jackson, Wilson, Cole and Walker; his sisters, Lois of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Carol of Milwaukee, Wis.; sister-in-law Barbara of Pittsburgh; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Loretta (Meyer) Froehlich, brother and sister-in-law Nord and Grace Froehlich; brother and sister-in-law Rev. Ronald and Judie Froehlich; and brothers-in-law Rev. Tom Armour and Blake McDuffie.
Interment will take place in a private ceremony at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. There will be a public memorial service in Williamsburg on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. at King of Glory and one in New York at St. Luke Lutheran Church of Dix Hills on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 1:30 p.m.
The family requests memorials be directed to King of Glory Lutheran Church or St. Luke Lutheran Church in his honor.
