She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Harry J. Brennan; father, Charles Scheaffer; mother, Edna Scheaffer; sisters and brothers, Dorothy Glasser (Millard), Marlen Scheaffer (Beatrice), Herman Scheaffer (Betty), Izola Miller (Ralph) and Charles Scheaffer (Roseann); and great granddaughter, Amelia Propst. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Kennedy (Michael); granddaughters, Dr. Anna Kennedy (MAJ Parker Propst, US Army) and Katherine Kennedy; and great granddaughters, Charlotte Propst and Grace Propst.
Charlotte was raised in Port Carbon, Pennsylvania and attended Port Carbon High School. After graduation from high school, Charlotte worked as a book keeper at H. L. Miller and Sons textile mill in Port Carbon. Charlotte was a very active member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Port Carbon, directing the children’s choir, playing the church organ, singing in the adult choir, teaching Sunday School and acting and singing in church stage production fundraisers. Charlotte married Harry Brennan in 1962. They moved to Maryland where Harry began his teaching career and they welcomed their daughter Pattie. Although living in Maryland, Charlotte remained close to her family and spent most holidays and special occasions in Pennsylvania.
Charlotte made good use of her musical gifts playing the piano and singing in various church choirs throughout her life. She was requested often as a vocalist for weddings and funerals. Charlotte was an avid volunteer and held many positions of leadership in school, church and civic organizations. Charlotte was a dedicated wife and mother who created an exceptional home for her family. She loved sewing and arranging flowers and was an outstanding baker and cook. Charlotte’s coconut cake was highly sought after at countless bake sales and church suppers. Some of her daughter Pattie’s earliest and fondest memories were learning how to bake cakes with her mother.
Charlotte was a doting grandmother to her granddaughter’s Anna and Katie. Visits to Nana and Pop Pop’s house were always highly anticipated. Taking trips to Heisler’s Cloverleaf Dairy in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania for ice cream and miniature golf, visiting Hershey Park, playing cards, eating “city chicken,” receiving pillow gifts and getting anything their hearts desired are just of few of Anna and Katie’s lasting memories.
Charlotte and Harry retired to Pottsville, Pennsylvania in 1993. In their retirement, they enjoyed traveling with friends, visiting Pattie’s family and keeping up with their granddaughters’ activities. In 2017, Charlotte and Harry moved to Williamsburg, Virginia to be closer to their daughter’s family.
Charlotte was a kind, generous, loving and affectionate wife, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was loved immensely and will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at a later date with inurnment at St Patrick Calvary Cemetery in Pottsville.
