

Chu Cha Kim, 92, passed away peacefully at home on October 21, 2017, following a brief illness. She is survived by four children and their spouses: Kim Maloney and partner Peter Kao; Shin Murphy and husband Timothy; Bobby Kim and wife Naomi, all of Williamsburg; and Grace Kim and husband Eric Ahn of Fairfax. Also surviving are her grandchildren Ronald Kleveland and wife Denise of Williamsburg; Jeanie Murphy of Richmond; Michelle Kimberlin and husband Stephen of Glen Allen; Jacob Kim and fiancée Marissa Espinosa of Williamsburg; and Sarah Kim of Blacksburg. She also leaves behind six great grandchildren: Shelby, Saleen, Tatyana, and Jesse Kleveland; and Liam and Audrey Kimberlin.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Hyon Jun Kim.
She was born on February 11, 1925, in the city of Pyongyang, in what is now known as North Korea. Following the Korean War, she and her husband made a life for their family in South Korea. In 1982, she and her husband followed their children to the United States and became longtime residents of Williamsburg. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and will be greatly missed.
She had an unwavering faith in God and spent many of her days finding comfort in the Bible. She was a longtime member of the Holy Cross International United Korean Methodist Church in Newport News. She will always be fondly remembered for her beautiful singing of her favorite hymnal “All the Way, My Savior Leads Me,” and the song “Jingle Bells.”
The viewing will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Tuesday, October 24, from 6pm to 8pm, and the funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 25, at 10am also at Nelsen Funeral Home. She will be laid to eternal peace next to her husband at Williamsburg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the James City County Fire Department.
