Cindy Marie Strelecky, a precious wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026 at the age of 70. After courageously battling cancer for several years, she crossed over the rainbow and into God’s loving arms, free from pain and surrounded by peace.
Born on December 14, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, Cindy was the cherished daughter of Carl and Slavija Mitchell. She grew up on the South Side of Chicago, where she made countless memories with her siblings, developed a lifelong loyalty to the White Sox, and enjoyed many slices of deep-dish pizza. After graduating from Kennedy High School, Cindy began working in downtown Chicago, where fate introduced her to her future husband, Ed, in the very building where she worked.
As their family grew, Cindy chose a path that allowed her to care for her children while building a meaningful career. She lovingly ran a flourishing in-home daycare in Woodridge, Illinois, where she nurtured and shaped the lives of her own children and many others, for more than 30 years. After retiring, she and Ed moved to Toano, Virginia, to be closer to their grandchildren.
Cindy had a generous heart and creative spirit. She loved baking, cooking, reading, knitting afghans for others, cross-stitching, and spending time with friends. Her grandchildren especially treasured her legendary cookie deliveries.
Cindy was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Chris Mitchell. She is survived by her husband, Ed Strelecky; her sisters, Sonja (Alan) Danis and Nancy (Hank) Topczewski; her brothers, Ron Mitchell and Tim (Lois) Mitchell; her children, Mike (Jessica) Strelecky and Mallory (Brandon) Loflin; and her grandchildren, Madelyn, Ainsley (Cody) Lee-Rios, Ella, Owen, Jack, and Claire.
A celebration of Cindy’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 24, 2026, at Stonehouse Presbyterian Church, 9401 Fieldstone Pkwy, Toano, VA 23168, where she was a dedicated and cherished member of the congregation.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org/) in Cindy's memory.
