Words will never fully express how grateful I am to have known Derek. He was truly one of the most loving, encouraging, and intelligent people I have ever met.

Derek was always excited to share his latest idea or innovation at the office. There was never a dull moment when he was around. His upbeat, positive attitude had a way of lifting everyone around him, no matter the situation.

I will deeply miss our morning conversations, where we talked about everything under the sun—from how proud he was of Payton to whatever modifications we were planning for our trucks next. Those are memories I will always cherish, and I will do my very best to honor his memory.

I met Derik a couple weeks ago when he was helping his son move. Both of them could be considered "peas and carrots" as they compliment each other so well. Derik was in good spirits and excited for his son's next military command. He was moving furniture and rocking it like a pro. 

I'm grateful to my higher power for my recent connection. Whatever his religious beliefs, I know his Higher Power has welcomed and enveloped him with love.  

My love is endless for his family.

Just one of the funniest guys I've ever been around.  He was a big part of my life and will be missed dearly! Prayers to Johnny, Natalie, Mary, and the rest of his family.

I am without words.  A tragic loss far too soon.

Very saddened to hear of Derek's passing. Derek took a chance on hiring me without any prior experience in the assessment field in 2012. I learned a lot from him and there were times when he was tough on me, but it made me better at what we do. I will be eternally grateful he took that chance. Derek had a great sense of humor and he made the tough times working on a project fun and bearable. I can still hear him yelling "Nickie Stixx!" or "Stixx!" as he so often called me. He was one of a kind. I will miss him. Hearing the news of his passing on Tuesday was very upsetting. I've lost a mentor and a friend. Even though we no longer worked together whenever I needed help with a question or a reference or just to say, "hey," he would always answer that  call, email or text. I will miss you Derek. My thoughts are with Amy, Peyton, Olivia and the rest of his family.

I'm truly shocked and saddened by Derek's passing.  He was a true professional with a passion for mass appraisal.  It's ins and outs.  No detail was insignificant.  He taught me a lot and I'm sorry to say I didn't express that to him.  I must admit, he was funny and a great bestower of nicknames.  I have no doubt that he is with God right now, aka "Sky Daddy" to Derek, arguing his case that the Pearly Gates are in fact NOT overvalued.  My sincerest condolences to his wife, son and daughter.  He will be deeply missed.  Titans always are.

So saddened to hear of Derek’s passing. He was a true professional and a wonderful colleague whose spirit made every interaction enjoyable. Derek was also a mentor to many, always willing to share his insight and help others grow. I especially enjoyed his humor at the many conference dinners we shared. He will be deeply missed. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Derek was a kind soul that always made sure you knew how excited he was to see you; he had a way of letting you know that he valued and appreciated you.  He was always passionate about people and whatever project he was working on.  Anytime I visited his office, he would stop what he was doing in the middle of his busiest time of the year, make you take a seat for a bit, and spend time catching up, for as long as you wanted.  He will be deeply missed.

While Derek and I were colleagues, I always considered him a friend as well.  Derek was small in stature, but a giant in our field.  He was brilliant and was always willing to share that gift.  I will miss our talks every July at the Boar's Head and in the Fall wherever the IAAO had its conference. He wasn't flashy, just steady, kind and genuine.  My prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.   Rest well my friend!!

Derek you will be missed. You were always so happy  and greeted everyone with a great smile. You made a big impact on us all during such a short time here.  We know you are at peace now. Until we meet again.

Such a great person and personality that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.  He gave so much to each project he worked on, and his professionalism exceeded most.  I extend my deepest sympathy to this family.

Derek was such a great friend and colleague.  He was always striving to find better ways to perform his profession.  You could count on Derek to share his knowledge.  He was always happy and fun to be around.

Such sad news. Neale and I send our condolences to Derek's family. Derek was a great friend and very smart. We shared many stories and pictures of our boys, who are in the military. You will be missed.

Derek was a dear friend and I will truly miss him, along with his sincere personality,  happy smile, welcoming ways, and now, recalling all the fun times we shared.
