

Major General Donald J. Butz, DDS, FACD, USAF (RET.) passed away Monday, August 1, 2016. Born July 6, 1933 in Nevada City, California, he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from St. Louis University School of Dentistry in 1959. Gen. Butz entered the Air Force with a direct commission as a first lieutenant immediately after graduating from dental school. He was stationed from Japan to Germany with U.S. bases in between. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award with one oak leaf cluster and National Defense Service Medal with one bronze service star. He was presented the Saint Louis University Alumni Merit Award for Dentistry in 1991. He was promoted to Major General May 1, 1990, with same date of rank.
General Butz was the proud and involved Father of John (Debbie), Bill (Lynne), Jennifer and Jim (Vicki). He had nine wonderful grandchildren and loved going to their athletic games, graduations and family vacations. Besides his children, he is survived by his wife, Rose Marie (Burnette) Butz of St. Louis, MO.
Visitation will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA, Sunday, August 7, 4pm-6pm; Mass of Christian Burial to be held at St. Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Rd, Williamsburg, VA, Monday, August 8 at 11:00am.
