Doonie Gray Cole

December 19, 1933June 3, 2019

Doonie Gray Morgan Cole, 85, of Williamsburg, VA, passed away on June 3, 2019.

Doonie Gray Adams was born December 19, 1933, Rocky Mount, N. C. and was the oldest of nine children. She moved to Williamsburg in April 1956 with her first husband, Bobby G. Morgan, and 8 month old son, Bobby A. Morgan. Another son, Thurman Keith, was born 2 years later. Doonie was employed at United Virginia Bank in Merchants Square, Williamsburg, VA for 17 years and then worked for Eastern State Hospital for another 17 years. She also worked with husband Bobby for several years in his insurance and Real Estate Company. She retired May 1995. Doonie’s second marriage was to Howard Cole, Sr., for over 20 years. Doonie loved going back home to North Carolina to spend time with her mother and family and also enjoyed traveling with them. She was also an avid reader who loved to write and also enjoyed sewing, crocheting and making many different crafts over the years for gifts. Another passion was gardening, vegetables and floral. Her yard was a glorious display of flowering bushes, roses and many other seasonal flowers.

Doonie was a great family historian, keeping accurate accounts of birthdates, family events, and the life and times of earlier childhood days in North Carolina. Family was a central part of her heart. She loved and cherished all of her family and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by most recently her beloved son, Bobby A. Morgan; son, Thurman Keith; parents, Eula and Thurman Adams; husband, Howard Cole, Sr.; sisters, Joyce and Linda Lucas; and brothers, Gene and Alton Adams. Doonie is survived by daughter-in-law, Candace Morgan; grandchildren, Jennifer Ashburn, Miranda Morgan (Dan Hausman) and Keith Morgan; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Ainsley Ashburn, Dylan Barr, Jolene, Adaline and Zabien Hausman; sisters, Betsy Jackson, Earlene Williams, Dianne Monroe (Steve) and Carolyn Edelin; numerous nieces, nephews and greats; and stepchildren, Howard Cole, Jr. (Wanda), Lucy, Andy and Danny Cole.

Doonie Gray was instrumental in helping me obtain my first job after graduating high school. She taught me well, with emphasis on all skills needed to perform well in the workplace and in life. I'm still grateful for all she taught me about life.
