Born September 24, 1942, in Wilkes County, North Carolina, Dossie lived a life deeply rooted in her faith in God, her love for her family, and her desire to serve others.
Her life was a true reflection of her faith. Dossie did not simply speak about what she believed—she put her faith into action. She served God faithfully by caring for her family and friends, helping those in need, and walking through life with grace, compassion, and a generous spirit.
For more than 35 years, Dossie was a faithful member of Smith Memorial Baptist Church, now Gospel Way Baptist Church, where she was baptized and devoted many years to worship, Bible study, fellowship, and service. Her church family was an important part of her life, and her faith remained the foundation that guided her throughout the years.
Alongside Dossie through many of those years was her best friend, Norma Bateman. Their friendship was strengthened by a shared love of the Lord and a heart for serving others. Norma traveled and served alongside Dossie through their church, on many mission trips, and on vacations, sharing countless experiences and a friendship that became a treasured part of Dossie’s life.
Dossie’s servant’s heart carried her wherever people were hurting and help was needed. She became FEMA certified and responded following Hurricane Isabel, traveling to Chickahominy Haven, where she worked through difficult conditions and helped provide food and assistance to those affected by the storm.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Dossie traveled to New Orleans and served in American Red Cross humanitarian relief efforts. She willingly entered difficult conditions to help with cleanup and provide food and assistance to people who had lost so much. For Dossie, these acts of service were more than volunteer work—they were an expression of the faith she lived every day.
When she wasn’t serving others, Dossie found happiness in the simple things she loved most: spending time with her family, attending church, studying the Bible, sharing her faith, and spending time at the beach.
Dossie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy Lee Lucas; her mother, Elsie Howell; her father, Lanson Howell; and her grandson, Tommy Lee Moody.
She is survived by her son, Ronnie Lucas; her daughter, Debbie Carter and her husband, Kevin Carter; her granddaughter, Brittany Carter; four sisters; one brother; two brothers-in-law; and many other beloved family members and friends whose lives were touched by her kindness, generosity, and faith.
Dossie’s legacy will not simply be measured by the years she lived, but by the lives she touched, the people she served, the faith she shared, and the love she gave so freely. She lived what she believed. Whether serving her church, traveling on a mission, helping families following a disaster, or simply caring for someone who needed her, Dossie sought to be the hands and feet of Christ to others.
