Earle Frank Dhus

Earle Frank Dhus, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful servant of Christ, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2026. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy, a life composed with the same discipline and artistry that defined his two great passions: music and the people he loved.

Music was woven into the fabric of Earle's life from the beginning. From childhood, he was drawn to musical instruments, starting with the piano, then mastering the clarinet and saxophone to concert level. His youthful ambition was to play in the greatest jazz ensembles of the 1950s. By age 22, this musical prodigy had achieved both his dreams of performing with Woody Herman's Third Herd and Stan Kenton's orchestra. But Earle was not a man to rest on accomplishment. He pivoted toward the emerging field of computer programming in the early 1960s, recognizing that the discipline of musical composition and arrangement had prepared him perfectly to think in patterns and systems. What might have seemed a departure was, in fact, a natural extension of his gift for bringing order and composition to complexity.

After a brief stint in the Army during the Berlin Crisis that led him to the West Point Band, he joined IBM in the early 1960s and became part of a pioneering team that developed the world's first multi-programming operating system. This was a huge feat at the early stages of the computer industry and one that helped catapult his career for the next 30 years. His career allowed him to travel all over the globe. He even got a chance to live in Paris for over a year, which was a lifelong dream of his. Yet through all his professional accomplishment, Earle remained most proud of his family.

But the true love story at the heart of Earle's life was Madge. They met in high school and became high school sweethearts. They were even voted 'cutest couple' of their senior year. One of their favorite memories was going to Pasadena, California together with their high school band for the Rose Bowl parade in 1955, a thrill for both of them.

They married in 1960 and their bond deepened over 65 years of marriage, rooted in faith and built on a foundation of genuine love and devotion. They lived in many places including Michigan, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY and New Paltz, NY and spent over 30 years in Raleigh, North Carolina, before moving to Williamsburg, Virginia, a place they both especially loved.

Madge's passing in February 2026 left Earle profoundly changed, yet his faith in Christ sustained him. He spoke often of his longing to reunite with her, a reunion he has now found.

Earle is survived by his three children - Linda (Bob), Andy (Susie), and Aimee (Dave); his grandchildren Daniel (Karey), Jonathan (Jenna), AJ (Alex), Natalie, Abigail, and Emily; and his great-grandchildren Willow, Drew and Micah. Until age 80, he generously shared his musical gifts, teaching clarinet and saxophone to young musicians in his grandchildren's generation. Family gatherings were his joy: celebrating milestones, sharing stories, and simply being present with those he loved.

In faith, music, love, and family, Earle Frank Dhus lived a life of uncommon integrity and grace and he will be missed by all who loved him.
