Frances Simms Herman, 71, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2017. Fran lived all but the past few years in Hampton, VA, graduating from Hampton High School in 1964. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hampton, and a faithful believer in the hope of eternal life with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was the daughter of the late Robert Sherwood and Margaret Simms (Carleton) Walton of Hampton. She is survived by her two sons, Todd Herman and his wife, Paige of Cullowhee, NC and Scott Herman and his wife, Caroline and daughter, Caitlin of Germantown, MD; her brother, Bob Walton and his wife, Mary Landon of Williamsburg, VA; niece, Amy (Walton) Williams and her husband, Matt and their children, Josh, Stephanie and Chris of Manassas, VA; niece, Beverly Simms (Walton) Goodell and her husband, Doug, and their children, Jessica Simms, Megan, Ashley, Doug Jr., and Celeste of Waldorf, MD; her nephew, Robert Walton and his wife, Lesley and their children, Noelle and Owen of Austin, TX.
She was predeceased by her parents and her beloved husband, Larry.
Fran was a member of her local garden club, the D.A.R., and a special group of travel companions known as “The Lady Bugs.” She continued her father’s interest in the family’s genealogy, frequently educating others in the family about their heritage. She enjoyed strolls along Duke of Gloucester Street, taking in the ambiance of the season and the essence of history - this, to her, was almost magical. She took great delight in decorating her home with well-matched color schemes and flowers that reflected her overall sense of quiet eloquence. Fran was passionate in her support of her two sons in their many achievements, including soccer, in which both were very accomplished.
A special thank you is extended to her close friends from her days in Hampton, and to new friends made in Williamsburg, who gave freely of their time and grace to help her through these past few months.
A celebration of her life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 514 S. Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA, officiated by Senior Pastor Cindy Higgins at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 27. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, alongside her late husband, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516 or Hospice House of Williamsburg, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
